Welcome to Road Unraveled! We are Stephanie and Adam, married, part-time world travelers and we’re on a quest to make the most of our paid vacation time and see as much of this amazing planet as possible. We want you to make the most of your vacation time, too!
Originally from Portland, Oregon (Adam) and Boston, Massachusetts (Stephanie), we currently live and work in the Washington, DC area- and we have no plans to quit our day jobs. Like many professionals, we have struggled with incorporating vacation time into our lives. We’re passionate about our work (Stephanie owns her own learning and performance consulting company, and Adam works with digital strategy and design for a communications company), and we know how easy it is to let vacation time roll over—or even disappear—when you have deadlines to manage and teams that depend on you.
In 2013, after a few years of losing our use-it-or-lose-it vacation time, we decided to take a more strategic approach to our paid time off. Travel has always been a shared interest of ours, but our wanderlust tendencies used to be confined to web searches, bucket lists, and Pinterest. We decided to change that by creating a list of places we wanted to see around the world and allocating the time and money necessary to achieve our goals. Our strategies have helped us to explore everything from historic sites close to our hometown to places we had only seen in history books. We found that taking vacations not only made us healthier and happier, they helped us to be more focused, resourceful, and creative at work. The connection between using our vacation time and professional accomplishment has been undeniable!
We launched Road Unraveled as a travel blog in June of 2014 to share our stories, lessons learned, and tips to inspire others to make the most of their vacation time and expand their travel ambitions. Today, we also offer educational workshops to companies interested in exploring and promoting the benefits to encouraging people to use their paid time off. Our goal is to help you untangle some of the challenges that come with planning and taking vacations as you seek your own personal and professional success. There’s a lot to love about a little time off!™

CRAIG MATHIAS
Craig Mathias is a seasoned world traveler, having visited almost 25 countries on five continents as well as almost all of the United States. Craig’s day job for the past 25 years is working as a technology analyst specializing in wireless networking and mobile computing – hence all that global travel. He is also a published author, columnist, former elected public official, inventor, conference organizer, and popular speaker at a wide variety of events. Craig’s goal is to travel to at least as many countries as his daughter, Stephanie, who is in the lead at the moment.
